Many school districts offer special programs for academically gifted students. They have different names:
Entrance to gifted programs such as TAG in Plymouth Canton School District and ALPS in Northville School district are based on screening tests.
These screening tests are primarily of two types:
These tests (e.g., Iowa Test of Basic Skills; NWEA Measure of Academic Progress) measure a student's academic skills in one or more subjects.
These tests (e.g., Cognitive Abilities Test or CogAT) measure a student's analytical or reasoning abilities.
Students should be typically 1 or 2 grade levels above the school grade level in core subjects.
Aim Academics Math & English classes are helpful for building the math and language skills (including reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing) required for basic skills tests.
Students should practice reasoning skills through various activities such as playing strategy games and solving puzzles.
In addition, students should take Aim Academics TAG Prep class which teaches Verbal, Non-verbal, and Quantitatie analytical skills that will be helpful for the reasoning tests as well for general development of the student.
