State Functions
Depend on the change occurred, not the process by which it occurred.
  • Enthalpy change, entropy change, and free energy change are all state functions.
  • Standard state conditions
  • All gases are at 1 atm
  • All liquids and solids are pure
  • All solutions are at 1 M
  • Energy of formation of an element in its normal state is 0
  • Temperature: 298 K
  • ΔH
    Exothermic reactions: When bonds are formed, energy is released.

    Endothermic reactions: When bonds are broken, energy is absorbed.
    Bond Energy
    ΔHo = ΣBond energies of bonds broken - Σ Bond energies of bonds formed
    Heat Capacity
    Cp = ΔH/ΔT
    Specific Heat
    q = mcΔT
