General Education Requirements (GERs)

Description
Thinking Matters

Students fulfill the Thinking Matters requirement by completing a one quarter Thinking Matters course during their freshman year.

Writing and Rhetoric Requirement
  • WR1 is taken during freshman year
  • WR2 is taken during sophomore year
  • WIM (Writing in the Major) is taken once student has declared major
Language Requirement

Students are required to complete one year of college-level study in a foreign language.

  • Completing three quarters of a first-year 4-5 unit language course at Stanford

Major Requirement

Students must declare a major by the end of their sophomore year
Introduction to the Humanities (replaced by Thinking Matters)

One quarter introductory courses ­followed by two quarter thematic sequences.

  • IHUM-1 (formerly GER:1a): first-quarter course
  • IHUM-2 (formerly GER:1b): second-quarter course
  • IHUM-3 (formerly GER:1c): third-quarter course
Disciplinary Breadth

Completing five courses of which one course must be taken in each subject area.

  • DB-EngrAppSci (formerly GER:2b): Engineering and Applied Sciences
  • DB-Hum (formerly GER:3a): Humanities
  • DB-Math (formerly GER:2c): Mathematics
  • DB-NatSci (formerly GER:2a): Natural Sciences
  • DB-SocSci (formerly GER:3b):
Social Sciences Education for Citizenship

Two courses in different subject areas; or completing two Disciplinary Breadth courses which also satisfy different Education for Citizenship subject areas

  • EC-AmerCul (formerly GER:4b): American Cultures
  • EC-GlobalCom (formerly GER:4a): Global Community
  • EC-Gender (formerly GER:4c):Gender Studies
  • EC-EthicReas (GER:4d): Ethical Reasoning
