Historical Perspective
Dementia Precox=single diagnoistic category for many diff disorders. Kraeplin: dementia praecox --> schizoprenia(splitting of mental associations)
DSM-4
Criterion A: two or more active symptoms for at least one month. B&C: social function problems.
Subtypes
Five subtypes in the DSM-4.
Catatonic Type
symptoms of motor immobility or excessive and purposeless motor activity.
disorganized Type
disorganized speech, behavior, and flat/inappro affect.
Paranoid Type
systemic delusions with persecutory or grandiose content.
Undifferentiated Type
prominent psychotic syptoms and either meet criteria for several or none.
Residual
dont meet active phase symptoms but meet negative symptoms. partial remission
Related Psychological disroders
Description
Schizoaffective Disorder
boundary between schiizophrena and mood disorders, schizo episode + major depressive episode.
Delusional Disorde
dont meet symptomatic criteria for schizophrenia but are preoccupied for at least one month with delusions that arent bizarre.
Brief Psychotic Disorder
exhibit symptoms for a tleast one day but no more than a month.
Course/Outcome
begin in adolesence, poor outcome.
