The Currency Act of 1764
  • Banned paper currency as legal tender
  • established "vice-admiralty" court
  • colonists strongly protested and suffered trade deficiet with Britain
The Proclamation of 1763
  • purpose was to keep colonists on the eastern side of the Appalacian Mountains and The Indians on the Western Side
  • in order to stabalize relations with the indians, colonists couldn't go west of the line
  • colonists angered, saw policy as imposing on their rights, ignored the line

Road to Revolution

The Sugar Act of 1764
  • but the molasses tax in half, but added duties to other things
  • American exports subjected to close supervision
  • protests against this were widespread
The Stamp Act of 1765
  • Required a stamp tax on most printed material and legal documents
  • British passed this to help pay for troops stationed in North America
  • Many colonists considered this a violation of their rights as Englishmen
  • Colonial assemblied sent patitions and protests 
The Quartering Act of 1765
  • Required colonists to provide housing and provisions for British troops (included cooking, clothes, and shelter)
  • Colonists thought this was a violation of their rights
  • When the soldiers got to the colonies, the New York Provincional Assembly refused to supply billeting for the troops
The Townshed Act of 1767
  • Duties were placed on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea
  • Britain passed this to raise revenue for slaries and governors, t punish the colonies for refusing the Quartering Act, and to enforce trade regulations
  • Colonists organized economic boycotts to put pressure on Britain
Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Speech by Patrick Henry (1765)
  • given to Virginia House of Burgesses to convince the colonies to take arms against Britain
  • Henry claimed Britain would'nt compromise
  • British were angered and alarmed
  • Colonists were impressed w/ his speech and almost everyone voted to take arms after it
Boston Massacre in 1770
  • British soldiers killed 5 civilans and injured 6
  • A mob subjedcted British sentrys to verbal abuse, harrasment, and physical injuries from flying objects
  • They fired into the crowd w/out orders
  • John Admas defended soldiers in court, 6 acquitted and 2 convivted
  • Paul Revere produced a famous political cartoon that inaccuratly depicted the event
Boston Tea Party in 1773
  • After officials refused to return a cargo of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ship and dumped the cargo of tea into the harbor
  • All our friends in Parlaiment, appalled, untied with the British government against the colonies
  • British gov closed the port of Boston 
  • Samuel Adams defended the act
The First Continental Congress (1774)
  • attended by the 12 colonies in response to the Intolerable Acts
  • discussed economic boycotts on British Trade, rights and wrongs, and petitioning King George III 
  • British refused to listen to Congress and ignored all petitions sent to king
