Active Reading
  • Anticipate what you are going to read based on the type of text.
  • Question. Use 5Ws (who, what, when, where, and why)
  • Find the topic sentence and supporting details in each paragraph.
  • Practice
    Practice reading different types of texts.
    Visualize
  • Visualize and feel what you are reading.
  • Create sensory environment mentally (sight, sounds, smells, touch, and taste).
  • Preview and Skim
  • Preview and select the book or selection that you would like to read based on your need, interest, and ease of the text.
  • Selections with smaller paragraphs are easier to read.
  • Skim through the text, look at the outline, see the pictures and graphs to get the big picture.
  • Identify the type of text
  • Align Your Mind
    Make your mind your friend while reading by giving it a purpose. Read:
    • For enjoyment
    • Out of curiosity
    • As a challenge
    Create a Reading Environment
  • Remove distractions (TV, radio, instant messages, phone, etc.)
  • Make yourself comfortable
  • Ignore any distractions that you cannot control!
  • Improve Vocabulary
    Note down words you don't understand - learn word roots
    Create a Mind Map or Concept Map
    Initially make a mind map on paper or using a software such as MyndBook, but with practice you will be able to make mind maps mentally.
