This does not necessarily have to be your actual opinion.

The Counterargument
"Some people think ranch dressing is a better condiment because it has less sugar. They are wrong because ranch contains fat, which has more health effects that sugar, and barbecue sauce is fat-free."
Thesis
Thesis should give your opinion (Chicken strips are better with barbecue sauce than with ranch dressing) and your reasons (it is a tangy contrast to the breading and it is easily available in dipping cups.)
Examples
Use facts if you are writing out of class and can research. Use real-life examples if you're writing in class.
Thesis
This should present the aspects of what you are discussing (penguin habitats, diet, and social structures)
Thesis
This should include the claim you are making ("The Lion King demonstrates the power of friendship to overcome evil") and the ways you are demonstrating it ("through the speeches of Timon and Pumbaa and the actions of Simba.")
Examples
Use facts to supply information.
Examples
Use quotes sparingly. Try to work your quote into the sentence. Then ANALYZE the quote to show how it fits your thesis.
Climax
Your writing should have a moment of peak emotional tension. ("As I turned into the final lap of the race, I saw my worst enemy creeping up behind me. I tried to put on an extra burst of speed, but he was catching up. As we approached the finish line, he grew nearer and nearer....."
Agenda
Figure out what you want to say about yourself. Find a way to twist the topic so that you can make that point.
