Hope
The man instills this into his son. He keeps telling him not to give up, and however difficult the situation is he still wants him to try and survive. Even when the man is breathing his last, he still hopes for the son to continue the journey and stay alive.
Father/Son Bonding
They are each other's lives, and even though they spend so much time together, they still have their own individual personalities and beliefs.
Struggle For Survival
Including the conflict/disagreement between father and son. Differences of opinion (ex. whether to help people on the road in need)
Boy becoming Mature
There is a dramatic change in the boy's maturity level from the beginning of the book to the end.
The Man Gives Hope to the Boy
"Goodness will find the little boy. It always has. It will again."
Boy and the Gun
Early on in the novel, the boy was hesitant to take possession of the gun. Now, he's more confident in handling it and is more careful.
