Elizabeth's prejudiced even after hearing from Miss & Mr. Bingley and her sister, she still thinks Mr. Wickham is respectable and great.
Mr. Bennet's Humor
I love Mr. Bennet's sense of humor. He is so funny. Even in tough times like the rejection of Mr. Collins, he still ends up cracking a joke. He is definitely one of my favorite characters!
Discussion between Jane and Elizabeth about Miss. Bingley
This part shows a great example of their personalities. I think Elizabeth is right though; Miss Bingley is not so sincere herself, and Jane always does not catch/see the flaws in people.
Jane and Elizabeth's Maturity
In many ways, Jane and Elizabeth act more mature than their mother. They were much more composed about acknowledging the marriage between Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins than their mother.
Mr. Collins' Proposal to dance
Mr. Collins put Eliza in a bad position; she can't really deny his request, although she really wants to spend the night with Wickham. Mr. Collins seems like a good-natured and intentioned man, but he has wrong timing.
Wickham's Absence at the Ball
I feel bad for Elizabeth because she was very much looking forward to spending the evening with Wickham but she is very unreasonable to think it is Mr. Darcy's fault. Wickham didn't show up because he didn't want him too; not because Darcy forbade him.
Elizabeth and Darcy at the Ball
Before, Elizabeth wanted to start the conversations, but now it is Darcy. Elizabeth was looking forward to getting to know Wickham, but instead she is getting to know Darcy. I think that's kind of ironic.
Elizabeth Getting To Know Darcy
Even though Elizabeth claims to be trying to get to know Darcy's character, she's actually just confirming her suspicions.
Miss Bingley Criticizing Wickham
The first time Miss Bingley could be of some help, and Elizabeth is ignoring it. She's already got her opinions of every one and Bingley has her own intentions but this time she is actually right.
Elizabeth Talks About Darcy
Elizabeth keeps bringing Darcy back into her conversation and her mind. She can't stop thinking about him, just like he can't stop thinking about her.
Elizabeth Denies Mr. Collins
I was really wondering how Elizabeth would deny Mr. Collins proposal. But to me it felt like Elizabeth's refusal was kind. Mr. Collins, however, obviously did not get the hint.
Mr. Collins' Repeated Proposals
If I was Elizabeth, I would have gotten mad! But she holds her composed behavior and denies him again and again in the politest way she can, Mr. Collins is just making things worse for himself.
Aftermath of the Refusal
I found it funny, yet appropriate, that Mrs. Bennet would be satisfied if her daughter had protested with intentions of encouraging Mr. Collins.
After Mr. Collins admitted that maybe him and Elizabeth were not meant to be together, I started to think that maybe he isn't that crazy after all. At least he gets it though that Elizabeth doesn't want to marry him.
Not Telling Mrs. Bennet About Bingley in the Letter
The girls were smart not to tell Mrs. Bennet about Miss Darcy because 1. Mrs. Bennet would probably overreact and 2. Her marriage hopes with Mr. Collins just got crushed, so telling her about Bingley would make her devastated.
Charlotte and Mr. Collins
Okay, so just because Elizabeth doesn't like Mr. Collins, it doesn't mean Charlotte shouldn't! Elizabeth is prejudiced by her own opinions and therefore cannot imagine a simpleton like Mr. Collins with one of her friends.
End of Volume 1
Jane Austen's writing - an event happens, then everyone's reactions to it - reminds me of Indian Soap Operas.
